2009 Book Reviews #9

A Song I Knew by Heart by Bret Lott

An "OK" book. I expected much more of a book based on the story of Ruth. The storyline was a little weak in areas and while the story of love and forgiveness is definitely a good one, this book just didn't deliver as well as I expected it to.

One L by Scott Turow

While this book is old - published in 1977 - I still found Mr. Turow's reflections of his first year as a law student very interesting. I know part of the reason is that in the late 70's/early 80's I worked with 2 people who were also attending law school. It brought back memories of what they were going through. It would be interesting to read a more current book written by a 1L to see how much things have changed over the years.

Sutter's Cross by W. Dale Cramer

I like Mr. Cramer's books. This one did not disappoint. A story of family, greed and miracles. Another one worth reading.

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

A really good book! It was one of those stories that drew me in and kept me wanting to read and learn where life was taking the characters. A wonderful story of friendship and family.

Music and Silence by Rose Tremain

If you like historical novels, you will probably like this one. A story set in Denmark in 1629 revolving around the King of Denmark, the queen, a musician and the queen's lady. Well written.

Sleep Toward Heaven by Amanda Eyre Ward

I like Ms Ward's books. This one is a thought provoking story of grace, mercy and forgiveness. It made me wonder how I would react if I were the different characters. Not a light read but not overbearing. One that stays with you.

July 2024 Reads

I read 8 books this month   I enjoyed them all with 4 of them rating 4 stars, and 4 of them rating 3 stars.  Here are my thoughts on each one. The Husbands - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Holly Gramazio This was a fun book to read.    It stretched my normal “based in realty” self and it was an enjoyable ride.    There were a few plot holes and I expected a little more depth as far as what Lauren learned from the experience.    But overall it kept my attention and entertained.    Sometimes that’s enough from a book. The Drowning Woman - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Robyn Harding This was our book club pick for the month and it was a good choice.    I kept guessing where it was headed and was half right and half wrong.    It wasn’t always believable and the ending was a little too easy.    But getting there was a fun ride.   The plot does have some loose similarities to Housemaid - different settings but still a lot alike.    So y...

October Books Read 2021

I read 6 books in the month of October.   That's how my reading goes - in ebbs and flows.   Part of it is life happens.   It was a busy month as we were able to take a long weekend for a runaway to Eureka Springs, Arkansas.   That was followed by my hosting Book Club, our granddaughter (and her mom and dad) from California here and a trip to Oxford, Mississippi to spend some time with a good friend and go see LSU on the football field.   All fun things and I was still able to work some good books in. I didn't plan it this way, but for the spooky month of October, all of my books were what I would call some form of mystery.   I would not say any of them were scary, but they all had some form of murder and good and bad guys and it was up to the reader to try to determine which was which.    Something else that was different this month, 2 of the books I read were from the library.   I grew up going...

2009 Book Reviews #2

I'm so far behind on my reviews. What follows is abbreviated reviews of some of the books I've read this year. On this list my top 3 would be - Three Junes, Same Kind of Different as Me, and A Thousand Splendid Suns Three Junes by Julia Glass I wasn't sure about this book when I first started it, but found myself drawn to the story and the people. It is about family and the expectations they put on each other and on themselves, and about love and basically just surviving life. Girl With a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier This is an easy read that is best described as a story. I found nothing deep in it or any layers, but did enjoy the word picture it presented. It is set in Holland and I could picture the life and the world that the characters inhabited. Another decent book. Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore A true story that is a tribute to a woman who saw people through the eyes of God. She lived a life of grace and service that reflected God...
